Dentistry for kids is a pediatric dental specialty that strives to provide children and teens with dental care that is free from pain and anxiety. Most of the time, pediatric dentists also treat people with special needs who are over 18 years of age.

At Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry, we work hard to create a child-friendly environment where our young patients feel comfortable, happy, and confident.

Pediatric Dental Care

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, dentists must complete at least two years of additional training to become pediatric dentists. At Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Shohreh Sabeti have received extensive education and training to manage comprehensive dental care for babies, children’s and teenagers.

Some of the tasks that they perform include:
•  Providing dental cleaning and dental exams
•  Applying sealants and fillings and fluoride to children’s teeth
•  Managing the gap left by a lost tooth or multiple teeth
•  Preventing thumb sucking and use of the pacifier
•  Safe and effective sedation of children
•  Emergency pediatric dental care
•  Offering advice on diet and nutrition

We also recommend special products and equipment for little mouths that can encourage your children to take better care of their teeth in a fun way.

Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

Most parents don’t take their younger children to the dentists until after they have developed a cavity. However, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child should have their first visit to the dentist at six months and no later by one year of age. This is crucial since your child’s first teeth will erupt during this time, and it is essential that you take care of it for your little one’s continued oral health.

During your child’s first visit, we will check their mouth for any oral health issues; however, the first visit, as an “ice breaker.” This is the time when your child will first develop their impression of the dentist’s office, so we will try to make your child’s first visit as fun and comfortable as possible.

We may also educate parents on baby oral issues like:
•  Baby bottle dental decay
•  Infant mouth cleaning
•  Use of pacifiers and teething
•  Advise on infant feeding practices
•  Thumb or finger sucking

After the first visit, we encourage you to bring your child to us every six months. By age three, your child will have their full set of primary teeth and will start having their comprehensive dental examination. By age six, your child will experience their first baby tooth loss and eruption of the adult tooth. By age eight, most kids should learn how to floss on their own. By age 13, most children have acquired their full set of adult teeth, except the third molars. By age 17, your child may get their first wisdom tooth.

Therefore, the entire period of childhood is crucial for your child to develop good oral health that will last them a lifetime. Remember that the health of your child’s primary teeth directly relates to their secondary teeth. A tooth that has developed a cavity may spread the infection to the adult tooth growing behind it. Prematurely lost teeth can also result in misaligned teeth that would need orthodontic help in the future.
