Understanding the Effects of Having an Impacted Tooth
Posted on 3/20/2020 by Office Sabeti
An impacted tooth occurs when one of your back molars doesn't break through the gum line. Most of the time, impacted teeth happen when there isn't enough room for the tooth to come in. However, there are many reasons a tooth may become impacted.
There may not be enough room in your mouth due to overcrowding or your wisdom teeth may just not come in properly.
Impacted teeth usually occur when a person's wisdom teeth are coming in. People can also get impacted teeth without their wisdom teeth coming in. However, this is uncommon. Impacted teeth can cause a host of different problems for the people they affect, which is why it's important to have them removed.
How an Impacted Tooth Affects Your Mouth
Impacted teeth may not seem like that big of a deal at first. However, they can cause a lot of problems. Partially impacted teeth create a gum flap, which is hard to clean properly. People with partially impacted teeth often experience infection because they can't reach the food and bacteria underneath the flap. In this case, a person will feel slight discomfort in their gums.
Another way impacted teeth cause problems is that they are painful. Impacted teeth can press up against the sensitive nerves in your gums and jaw. This pressure can cause quite a bit of pain if they aren't removed.
Finally, impacted teeth may make your teeth shift. When a tooth presses up against your other teeth, it can make them move. If you have straight teeth, and impacted tooth can ruin them. Impacted teeth won't immediately cause your teeth to shift. However, they will move them over time.
If you have impacted or partially impacted wisdom teeth, it's necessary to have them removed. Removing them will not only make you feel better, but also keep your mouth healthy. If you're interested in getting your wisdom teeth removed, please contact our office for help.
